“Get Hot New Stuff” for KDE *update*

Tuesday, March 15th, 2005

The German Linux portal Pro-Linux published an article (german) on kstuff which lets you enhance your KDE desktop and applications using the Get Hot New Stuff framework (err, nice name..). Until now I only stumbled over kdesktop’s feature to retrieve wallpapers directly from kde-look.org.

update:
Just found an interview with Josef Spillner, the author of KHNS on dot.kde.org.

Acrobat Reader 7.0 for Linux *update*

Monday, March 14th, 2005

After skipping v6.0 for the free OS, Adobe released version 7.0 of its PDF-Viewer for Linux. At the moment, there’s only a RPM available. Maybe other formats will follow, then again, probably not. In any case, most likely Christian Marillat will take care of it for Debian ;)

update:
There’s also a g’zipped tar available, seems like the mirrors haven’t been updated, yet.

Binaries please! GNOME 2.10 on Debian?

Sunday, March 13th, 2005

Like mentioned in my previous post, GNOME 2.10 has been released. I really want to test it but I’m way too lazy to compile it myself. I’m running KDE CVS HEAD here and that’s enough compiling and keeping track of dependencies for me.
Anyhow, because of that uncooperative and hoary hedgehog, I’ve been looking around for debian-packages. While not finding exactly packages, I stumbled over this article published at Jordi Mallach’s Blog. According to Jordi, Debian GNOME maintainer, there will be packages on Alioth anytime soon. (Btw, preliminary packages for KDE 3.4 can be found there as well..)

The stubborn hedgehog

So I wanted to install myself Ubuntu’s Hoary Preview. I’m using Ubuntu’s X.Org packages on Debian anyway and after all this talking about Ubuntu and the fact the the latest preview contains GNOME 2.10, which I, as a hardcore KDE user, have to evaluate for based-on-facts-desktop-environment-flamewars, I decided to give it try. Besides that, I have Problems with my D-Link DWL-122 USB WiFi adapter since switching to udev on Debian. It just disconnects if any USB/IEEE1394 devices are plugged in or the bus is scanned (which for example KDED Media Manager does every now and then).

Mac mini. Out of stock! Worldwide?

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

I’ve been using Windows and well, let’s just pretend that didn’t happen. I’m somewhat tied to it at work but at least they pay me for doing so. At home Debian GNU/Linux runs very well and while not willing to trade it in, I’m quite curious about Apple and it’s OS. I have the opportunity to use Macs at work, but it just isn’t the same.

Anyhow, after crawling the web and reading about a gazillion reviews and opinions about Apple’s latest offspring and OS X, I finally made up my mind and decided to buy the Mac mini.

Nice try. The Apple Store shipps within 2 weeks (which will most likely add to at least six) and all local dealers only have empty shelves. That is except for the one tiny box they have in their showroom and can’t sell. Even ebay shows a remarkable lack of those little devices, at least of trustworthy offers. And of course, I just can’t buy a used one. Virginity of electronic devices is of considerable importance to me ;)
