For FTP, I've used RBrowser (costs) and RBrowser Lite (free) and also Panic's Transmit (costs). All were OK for my purposes. (I'm told Fugu is good, too, and free - but I think it only does SFTP.) BBEdit ain't free, but TextWrangler is. BBEdit has a really nice file browser built-in. Maybe, but anyhow: <a href="http://cyberduck.ch/" rel="nofollow">Cyberduck</a> supports external editors. I got myself <a href="http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/index.shtml">TextWrangler</a> which has nice syntax highlighting and even built-in FTP support.
