Flaming debian-kde

Thursday, April 7th, 2005

For an exampe how people never get tired of flamimg and trolling on the same topics over and over again, check this thread on the debian-kde mailing list.

It all started with the somewhat innocent question if KDE 3.4 will hit SID anytime soon. The unavoidable followed soon enough: “And where’s x.org?” “Can sarge be considered vaporware?” “Why can’t Debian if Ubuntu can?” “So get lost and use ubuntu” “Who needs x.org anyway?” “Some ppl have the latest on-board graphics only supported by x.org!” “Hell, Ubuntu is _based_ on Debian, Debian-devs are doing the majority of work here!” “Debian-devs are arrogant pseudo-elite anyway.” “Libranet! and I paid for it!” “Then what are you doing on this list anyway?” “Btw, how do debian-devs get their money?”

I guess you get the picture. Even though most points are valid from the appropriate perspective, this all has been argued and reasoned before. Anyhow, it’s pretty hard not to reply to this thread, it looks so much fun.. then again, I really don’t consider myself addressed by any of the statements and generally I refuse feeding trolls.

Icons-only for Kontact’s panel

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

Piotr SzymaƄski created a patch for removing the text of Kontact’s icon panel. Not exactly eagerly awaited but nice nontheless. Especially if kdepim’s source is lying around anyway. Took about 7 minute to recompile/install Kontact, no big deal for some minimalism ;) . Take a look:

Gallery added

Monday, March 28th, 2005

I wanted to do this since the beginning but just didn’t find a appealing solution. Yesterday, Patrick pointed me to Konqueror’s Create Image Gallery feature. Basically this will create thumbs and a html-file for the current directory. Dead-simple. Kudos to KDE! This should allow me to upload images, index them on ftp and have a nice and easy to use gallery running. At least I thought so. When trying to use the feature, Konqi refused:

Creating an image gallery works only on local folders

Guess I have to use a local mirror, then.. anyhow, it’s up and running.

BTW, there’s already a wishlist-item posted on bugs.kde.org for this. Want to vote?

amaroK script for xchat

Friday, March 25th, 2005

While digging through my ~, I stumbled over a little python script I wrote some time ago. Nothing fancy, it just lets you display the song currently played by amarok in your active xchat-channel. Download and more info.
